How to get a security guard license in Maine
Maine licenses security companies rather than individual unarmed guards; the licensing agency is the Maine State Police (Maine Department of Public Safety), licensing under 32 M.R.S. Chapter 93 (the commissioner). Employers explain what their own guards need.
| Licensing agency | Maine State Police (Maine Department of Public Safety), licensing under 32 M.R.S. Chapter 93 (the commissioner) official source |
|---|---|
| Credential for unarmed guards | No individual guard license: the state licenses the contract security company; guards must meet the 32 M.R.S. 9410-A qualifications and be reported by the company official source |
| Credential for armed guards | No separate state armed guard credential found in Chapter 93 (section 9416 allows non-concealed loaded weapons only in armored/transport vehicles); the contract security company must submit a statement that the employee meets the qualifications before the employee wears, carries or uses a firearm official source |
| Minimum age, unarmed | 18 (32 M.R.S. 9410-A) official source |
| Minimum age, armed | 18 (32 M.R.S. 9410-A applies to every guard of a contract security company; Chapter 93 states no higher age for armed guards) official source |
| Background check | Done by the employing contract security company, not by an individual application: the company must investigate each guard against 32 M.R.S. 9410-A (no crime punishable by 1 year or more, etc.) and file a signed statement with the commissioner within 60 days of the start date, and before the guard carries a firearm or works a strike site. Chapter 93 sets no individual fingerprint requirement for guards (the fingerprint clause in 9405 applies to the company license applicant) official source |
| State fee | USD 121 with the application (USD 100 plus USD 21 background check) and USD 300 on issuance (contract security COMPANY new license (MSP application form; statute 9407 sets USD 400 = 100 + 300); not paid by individual guards); USD 221 (USD 200 plus USD 21 background check) (contract security COMPANY annual renewal (MSP form; statute 9408 sets USD 200)) official source |
| Renewal | Company license: 1 year, renewable annually (9408). No individual guard renewal official source |
| Working while the application is pending | No individual application exists. The company must report a new guard to the commissioner before the guard starts; it then has 60 days after the start date to finish the background investigation and file its statement, which is required before the guard carries a firearm or works at a labor dispute site (32 M.R.S. 9410-A) official source |
